Self-Discipline

Paul said, "Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize?  Run in such a way that you man win.  And everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things.  They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.  Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; but I buffet my body and make it my slave, lest possibly, after I have preached to others, I myself should be disqualified" (I Cor. 9:24-27).

We who are Christians are running a race and our opponent is Satan.  If we desire to win this race, we must practice self-discipline.  Please consider these 5 keys:

Key 1: Train yourself to make good use of your time.  The only time we know we have is now.  How are you using your "now?"  Are you using it to the glory of God?  Or are you wasting it away in selfishness?
Key 2: Study yourself, identify your strengths, and build on them.  We must know our strong points and develop them further.  We also need to know our weak points and seek out people who can help us develop those as well.
Key 3: Know your priorities.  What is most important to you?  Living a life here on this earth or preparing to dwell eternally in Heaven with our Lord?  Matthew 6:33 tell us that we should Seek the Lord first and foremost in our lives.
Key 4: Give your time to the people who produce results.  Surround yourself with people who have the same priorities as you.  They can help you stay focused, and you can help them as well.  Remember Paul's warning in I Corinthians 15:33.  Don't fool yourself!
Key 5: Take action whenever possible.  Always be ready to act!  Then when the time comes, ACT!

"Let us run with endurance the race set before us" (Hebrews 12:1b).  In practicing these 5 keys and hiding behind the Word, we will win the race!
