The Father of Lies

“You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it” (John 8:44).

The Power of the Lie to Deceive

Christ identified Satan as the father of lies, with “no truth in him.” At the art of lying he has proved himself a master. He began his work of deception with Adam and Eve and has continued relentlessly. Adam and Eve clearly understood the instruction God had given them about the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. “And the woman said to the serpent, ‘We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’ Then the serpent said to the woman, ‘You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.’ So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate” (Genesis 3:2-6).

Because of their disobedience Adam and Eve lost their earthly paradise. “So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life” (Genesis 3:24).

Satan continued his evil work so that by the time of Noah every thought of man’s heart was evil continually: “Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” (Genesis 6:5). Can you imagine a world so deep in degradation that man’s every thought was evil continually?

Solomon observed that a righteous man could not be found: “For there is not a just man on earth who does good And does not sin” (Ecclesiastes 7:20).

Satan was still effectively making use of the lie in the time of the prophet Micah: “The faithful man has perished from the earth, And there is no one upright among men …” (Micah 7:2).

Paul saw the dreadful spiritual condition of man in his day: “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). As long as man continued in this condition there could be no hope “For the wages of sin is death …” At this point it seemed the father of lies had the human race completely in his power and eternally separated from God.

The Power of Truth to Save

In the verse in which Paul said, “For the wages of sin is death,” he also continued, “but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). Eternal life is in Christ. Many wonderful things are in Christ. Redemption is in Christ (Romans 3:24). There is no condemnation in Christ (Romans 8:1). The love of God is in Christ (Romans 8:39). Sanctification is in Christ (1Corinthians 1:2). Our hope is in Christ (1Corinthians 15:19). Liberty is in Christ (Galatians 2:4). Every spiritual blessing is in Christ (Ephesians 1:3). Our redemption is in Christ (Ephesians 1:7). Our salvation is in Christ (2Timothy 2:10).

There is also eternal life out of Christ. This is not good, for it is eternal life separated from God. The time will come when “the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power” (2Thessalonians 1:7-9). In the day of judgment those who have not obeyed, those who are out of Christ will hear “Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels … And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life” (Matthew 25:41,46).

Since every spiritual blessing is in Christ, since eternal life is in Christ, since our salvation is in Christ, since our hope is in Christ, it behooves everyone to be in Christ. Otherwise, there is eternal life in the wrong place. It is in “the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” It is everlasting punishment.”

Not only has God provided good things in Christ, He has revealed how we may be in Christ. As penitent believers we may be baptized into Christ “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ” (Galatians 3:26,27).

When tempted Jesus applied the word of God to expose and defeat Satan (Matthew 4:1-10). He made use of truth to defeat the one in whom there is no truth. “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth” (John 17:17). Satan has no power of temptation equal to the power of truth.

For victory over Satan, the father of lies, we must all do that which the psalmist did: “Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You!” (Psalms 119:11).
