“And His name shall be called Wonderful …”(Isaiah 9:6). One of Thayer’s definitions of “wonderful” is “extraordinary.” How extraordinary, how Wonderful, is Jesus? Let’s let Scripture itself tell us.
Extraordinary in Birth
Micah 5:2— the Place — “But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Too little to be among the clans of Judah, From you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, From the days of eternity.”
Isaiah 7:14 — the Mother — “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.”
Luke 1:35 — the Father — “The angel answered and said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God.’”
Galatians 4:4 — the Time — “But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law.”
Luke 2:18 — the Wonderment — “And all who heard it wondered at the things which were told them by the shepherds.”
Extraordinary in Ministry
Matthew 3:17— a Voice out of Heaven (His baptism) — “and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, ‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.’”
Luke 9:35 — a Voice out of the Cloud (His transfiguration) — “Then a voice came out of the cloud, saying, ‘This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!’”
John 12:28 — the Voice out of Heaven (after His Jerusalem entry) — “‘Father, glorify Your name.’ Then a voice came out of heaven: ‘I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.’”
John 2:23; 3:2 — the Signs and Wonders — “Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, observing His signs which He was doing … this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, ‘Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.’”
Matthew 9:8,33 — the Authority — “But when the crowds saw this, they were awestruck, and glorified God, who had given such authority to men … After the demon was cast out, the mute man spoke; and the crowds were amazed, and were saying, ‘Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.’”
Luke 4:22; John 7:46 — the Words — “And all were speaking well of Him, and wondering at the gracious words which were falling from His lips; and they were saying, ‘Is this not Joseph’s son?’ … The officers answered, ‘Never has a man spoken the way this man speaks.’”
Extraordinary in Death
1Peter 2:22,23— the Attitude — “WHO COMMITTED NO SIN, NOR WAS ANY DECEIT FOUND IN HIS MOUTH; and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously”
1Peter 2:24 — the Selflessness — “and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.”
Luke 23:47; Mark 15:39 — the Righteousness — “Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he began praising God, saying, ‘Certainly this man was innocent’ … When the centurion, who was standing right in front of Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, ‘Truly this man was the Son of God!’”
Extraordinary in Resurrection
John 2:18-22— the Promise — “The Jews then said to Him, ‘What sign do You show us as your authority for doing these things?’ Jesus answered them, ‘Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.’ The Jews then said, ‘It took forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?’ But He was speaking of the temple of His body. So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.”
Matthew 27:66 — the Attempted Prevention — “And they went and made the grave secure, and along with the guard they set a seal on the stone.”
Matthew 28:6 — the Fulfillment — “He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying.”
Extraordinary in Ascension
John 16:28— the Promise — “I came forth from the Father and have come into the world; I am leaving the world again and going to the Father.”
Mark 16:19; Ephesians 4:10 — the Fulfillment — “So then, when the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God … He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.”
Acts 1:11 — the Promised Return — “They also said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.’”
In examining Jesus’ time on earth, we see that from His coming to His ascension into heaven, He is Wonderful. Jesus is the Christ. Jesus is The Savior. He is my Savior. His attitude toward me is so Wonderful:
He is Wonderful because of His love; “and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma” (Ephesians 5:2).
He is Wonderful to plead with us; “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.” (Revelation 3:20).
He is Wonderful to be patient; “Yet for this reason I found mercy, so that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life.” (1Timothy 1:15,16).
He is Wonderful to intercede; “Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.” (Hebrews 7:25).
Jesus is Wonderful. Will we accept His Wonderful gift?
