God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth. Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you; and to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the sky and to every thing that moves on the earth which has life, I have given every green plant for food”; and it was so. (Genesis 1:27-30)

The word, “blessed,” can mean spoken well of, extolled, or praised. Certainly, this is the way that it is used when speaking of man’s address to God. “Blessed be the LORD, Because He has heard the voice of my supplication.” (Psalm 28:6). The sense in which it is used in this examination is “to cause to prosper, to make happy” (Vines’ Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words). “Self-contained happiness” is a good way to think of being blessed. That is, a blessed state is not dependent upon external conditions, but is contained within a relationship between self and God. Paul expresses this meaning so concisely: “… the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus … The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.” (Philippians 4:6-9). Paul “practiced what he preached” (Philippians 4:10-13).

God blesses in both physical and spiritual matters. God’s word is replete with examples of those whom He blessed in physical ways. He blessed the first man and woman—Adam and Eve. He blessed Noah (Genesis 9:1). He blessed David (1Samuel 18:5) and Hezekiah (2Chronicles 32:30). The list continues.

God also uses blessings to teach. The reign of Jeroboam II (1Kings 14:23-29) was particularly wicked, but God blessed the northern kingdom to remind them of what they could have if they would only obey. He taught the people the lessons of His compassion and His righteousness. The lessons weren’t heeded. The nation was taken away by Assyria. In spite of a few faithful leaders, the southern nation of Judah did not heed the lessons, either. The Babylonians removed Judah. A remnant later returned as God promised. They, too, did not learn well. God wanted them to know His blessings. “From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from My statutes and have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD of hosts. “But you say, ‘How shall we return?’ “Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing Me! But you say, ‘How have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings. “You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing Me, the whole nation of you! “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says the LORD of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.” (Malachi 3:7-10).

How apparent are the lessons today? It should be abundantly clear that God blesses those who put their trust in Him (Psalm 1:1-2; John 20:29). Blessings come upon those who endure with faithful obedience (1Peter 1:6-9; James 1:12; 5:11).

Physical and spiritual blessings of God are immeasurable (Colossians 1:17). There are so many blessings in Christ! God blesses with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3‑14)! What a blessing to be in fellowship with God and fellow Christians (1Corinthians 1:9; 10:15-17; 2Corinthians 13:14)!

Right now, take a pen or pencil and make a list. Make a list of all of the ways in which God has blessed you. Don’t forget both the physical and spiritual blessings. You will run out of space to write in short order.

God’s blessings never end. He blessed in the past. He blesses now. He blesses eternally. All those who are His blessings in store. “Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” (Matthew 25:34). Are you with the King? Are you in Christ? Are you walking in the light as He is in the light? Can you count the hope of eternal life among your blessings?

Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter by the gates into the city. (Revelation 22:12-14)
